I had this idea driving around south Portland this last week that I could capture the essence of the city by defocusing my camera. I’d taken all these in-focus atmosphere shots over a week. But many of them were lacking a real subject. I was trying to capture the essence of what I was looking at — the quality of the light, the colors — more than the subject itself. It’s just a street, right? So, driving around, I started playing with shooting out of focus; capturing just those things. The colors, the shapes of those colors interacting, rather than the street itself. Some turned out, some didn’t.

This isn’t my first foray into out-of-focus photos. Back when I was living in Portland one of my favorite photos was in this style, out of my window one morning.

Anyway, I think I might post a series here over the next week. Most of them are from the southeast.
