shadow of a tree on the sidewalk

Rainy Tree Shadow

Just in front of my apartment in Portland was a big old tree. I shot this late one winter night coming home from class when it was pouring rain and I thought the light over the front door that was casting a shadow on the sidewalk out front looked pretty cool. I like the lines and motion that came out of this shot.

This is the end of my abstract, Portland, hand-held series (at least for now). Since moving back to Bozeman I haven’t been able to get as many shots like this. Except in winter, when it’s snowing, Bozeman doesn’t get the intense cloud cover that reflects lights the way that Portland got on a regular basis year-round. (That, and the fact that there’s less light pollution since most of Bozeman is residential.)

  • i have the same lighting and location issues. great light atmosphere and mood when i’m on the west coast and then just merciless light when in Alberta – mid day photos are often a write off. you’re right – the snow helps.
